NOT MANY SYNONYMS FOR KISSING

Posted on October 30, 2012

I swear, Ned Firebreak is a tame book for all ages. I keep telling myself this even as I write an entire chapter where our hero and heroine escape using the power of puckering up. As I write the chapter where Ned takes advantage of a pun spell that allows him to fly by the seat of romance, and escape certain death through some innocent smooches, I began to realize there are very few synonyms for kiss.

Wow, this book is certainly stretching me as a writer. I set out to write a story with high adventure and loads of dragon fighting and it's turning out to be a fantasy romance that I am certain will enthrall even the stubbornest, most hardened boys out there.

Seriously, this is a princess book for both princes and princesses. And gregarious animated trees too! I'm certain to have a lock on any literate vegetation out there. My tree sidekick is one lively plant.

Anyway, I have to go finish the scene and make sure Ned and Lil keep their escape to just minor lip-smacking.

Golly gosh! Another word for kissing? Well, there's always snogging, a very British word, and suck-face... but no, there aren't many alternatives, are there? Oddly enough, I'm having to deal with this issue in Fog Book 6 because Hal REALLY needs to step up and lay one on Abigail before the series is out. (A young female fan has been demanding this very thing. I think she has crush on Hal.)

And that's the thing, the alternatives to kiss are so slang and sound out of place in the tone of a fantasy novel.

Now if you look at all the synonyms for hug, you begin to see we as a people have really dropped the ball in developing multiple appellations for locking lips. Hey, there's another.

Oh, and I just thought of a new title for this blog entry: Lip Service.

Hug- embrace, squeeze, snuggle, clasp, cuddle, enfold
